An international team led by Chinese scientists is preparing a constellation of thirty CubeSats. Over roughly four years, the small spacecraft are expected to be placed in highly elliptical Earth orbits, where they can jointly observe the Sun and violent events in deep space.
The project includes partners from Egypt, Indonesia, Senegal, Serbia and Thailand. A distributed network can view the same event from several positions and combine measurements that would be difficult for a single satellite to collect.
Researchers want to capture solar activity and brief cosmic explosions with greater precision. Better timing and spatial data may improve the study of space weather, which can affect satellites, navigation and other infrastructure on Earth.
A separate group within the wider initiative is also expected to study cislunar space and search for resources. Details of that part remain limited, so the announcement is best understood as a long term scientific plan rather than a completed operational network.
