Rural cooperative shops, remembered by many Chinese people from earlier decades, are gaining a new role. Authorities are integrating them into distribution networks for food, agricultural supplies and emergency support in more remote areas.
The supply and marketing cooperative system now includes about 856,000 local outlets. A plan for 2030 calls for one hundred national reserve warehouses and one thousand county distribution centres.
Modernisation is intended to connect the small shop with wholesalers, warehouses and digital inventory systems. Cooperatives can also buy local produce and make fertiliser, seed and basic services easier for farmers to obtain.
The nostalgic appearance of some shops is only the visible part of a broader change. Reliable transport, product quality and the ability to operate during floods, outages or other emergencies will determine whether the model succeeds.
