Some Chinese cities are changing how schools are organised as fewer children enter the earliest grades. Local authorities are combining educational levels and allowing more flexible enrolment to make better use of buildings and teachers.
Demographic change is not uniform. Some districts have spare places, while rapidly growing urban neighbourhoods may still face pressure on capacity. A single solution is therefore unlikely to suit every region.
A combined school can share laboratories, sports facilities and specialist staff. It must also preserve age appropriate spaces and ensure that longer travel does not make education less accessible in rural communities.
Flexibility can help manage short term fluctuations, but it cannot solve the demographic trend by itself. Class sizes, teaching quality and the effect on families and staff will need close attention.
