A Chinese entertainment group is preparing a thirty episode adaptation of the classic Journey to the West made largely with artificial intelligence. Each episode is expected to run for about forty minutes, and the project reached prime time television while production was still under way.
The schedule is unusual as well. The commission called for broadcasting to begin within only three months, while later episodes continue to be produced. This allows the creators to observe audience reactions and adjust the pace and presentation of forthcoming chapters.
Artificial intelligence is being used across the production chain, from visual concepts to completed sequences. Human editorial control remains essential because a classic story still needs coherent drama, stable characters and culturally sensitive treatment.
The project shows how the Chinese audiovisual market is searching for commercial uses of generative technology. The real test will not be production speed alone, but whether viewers accept the narrative quality of a long television format.
