Hong Kong's market for preowned luxury fashion is attracting a growing number of younger shoppers. They are looking for a more affordable route to quality brands, distinctive pieces and purchases with a smaller environmental footprint than entirely new goods.
The selection now ranges from small independent and charity shops to professional chains with authentication services. Japanese retailer Ragtag has opened in Causeway Bay, joining established names such as Brand Off and 2nd Street.
Trust is crucial to the whole segment. Buyers consider condition, provenance, return policies and the method used to confirm authenticity. For expensive bags or jewellery, reliable documentation can influence resale value almost as much as the label itself.
Many shoppers also enjoy the hunt for a unique piece rather than the latest collection. A second life for fashion can combine price, personal style and sustainability, although no purchase is guaranteed to preserve its future value.
