Shichahai is one of the places where historic Beijing can still be explored after palaces and museums close. The area consists of Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai lakes, surrounded by hutongs, temples, former residences and small businesses. It is also one of the four heritage sections of the Grand Canal within Beijing.
Attention moves to the water in the evening. The banks offer views of traditional roofs, the Drum and Bell Towers and illuminated bridges. Sightseeing boats also operate in season, and night cruises may continue until late evening. Services must be checked according to weather and time of year.
A useful walking route begins at Wanning Bridge, continues through Yandai Xiejie and Yinding Bridge and, depending on time, follows Houhai or proceeds to Xihai Wetland Park. It connects the city's water history with the hutong street network without entering private courtyards.
The liveliest sections around Houhai can be noisy and full of bars. Side lanes and the western part of Xihai offer a calmer atmosphere. It is therefore worth leaving the main promenade for several public detours while respecting the residential character of the surrounding houses.
Teahouses and small restaurants make it possible to combine the walk with jasmine tea, noodles or traditional pastries. A specific venue is best chosen according to its current menu and opening hours because the area changes quickly and some tourist businesses alter their names and focus.
Shichahai after dark is not a substitute for visiting monuments by day. It offers a different view of a city where a historic waterway, ordinary life and evening entertainment share one space. A slow walk without trying to complete the entire circuit works best.
